Development Tools

Here at MEGA, we are not attached to one specific set of tools to make our games. 
For newcomers to MEGA, Game development, or USC's IMD or Computer Science Games programs, here is a list of tools you might find useful to make games and all of their varied components.

Along with the programs listed here we've attached some emails. You may contact that USC Students about that program for help, questions, or to find learning resources. 

Additionally, USC students have access to the great learning library Lynda, through here.

Game Editors

2D editors

  • Flash (Trial, or $500; PC/Mac)

Adobe's animation/coding tool. Art is vector-based by default but pixel images can be used as well. Games can be played in-browser, which led to its popularity. 
- Uses it's own language called ActionScript. Games can be played on PC/Mac (download or in-browser).

  • Game Maker (free, $25 for pro; PC/MAC )

    Potential for pure drag-and-drop "programming". It is recommended to read-up on the program's functions to make good use of it. Good for prototyping. 
    - Uses it's own language called Game Maker Language (GML) that is similar to a C language. Games are playable on PC/Mac (download) -  Edouard Lorenceau




A mac only editor 

3D Editors

  • Unity (Basic for free, Pro for $100/year for students; PC/Mac)

3D editor that creates 3D in-browser games or other.  
- Exports to IOS devices and Android with appropriate Pro version.

  • UDK - Unreal Development Kit (basic for free, License for $$; PC)

Full-fledged, highly advanced editor. Features a complete set of tools that go from level design to visual scripting to cut-scene creation. Highly detailed graphics.
- Uses it's own programming language called UnrealScript that can be arranged with Kismet, a visual code editor. Games are playable on the PC (download). -

Art

2D


Very powerful but more complex image editor.


A simple but robust editor. Light-weight.  - Edouard Lorenceau

3D



Easy, elegant 3d modeler based on a push/pull model. Great for environments or non-organic models. Used for some big AAA titles like Red Faction: Guerrilla or Uncharted 2.

Audio

Sound

Simple tool that lets you instantly create 8-bit sounds to be used in games. Great for very quickly generating sounds to spice up your game. Lets you randomly create a sound or use randomly altered presets.  Sounds export as .Wav 


Music

  • FMOD (free; PC/Mac)
Set of tools for making interactive music. Used by lots and lots of AAA professional games from World of Warcraft to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Needs some programming knowledge to implement interactivity into the game.
